Secret Life of the American Musical (Winter 2021)

Jan. 16 - Feb. 20
10:00am - 1:00pm

Instructor: Cheryl Coons

Musical theatre is one of the most lively and complex forms of theatrical storytelling. This course offers participants a big picture perspective on the elements of structure and craft that create dynamic music-driven stories. Experienced writers will gain new insights and tools for refining their work while sharing work from their musicals-in-progress. Newcomers to musical theatre writing will gain an overall understanding of the demands of the form, plus the confidence to present original work for feedback in a supportive class atmosphere. The course content includes examples from classic musical theatre masterworks, as well as contemporary musicals like Hamilton, Fun Home, The Band’s Visit, and Dear Evan Hansen. Flexible weekly assignments allow participants to use the class presentation time in the way that is most valuable for them: by sharing work from existing projects, creating new work based on optional suggested exercises, or presenting revisions of previous work for response.

20% Early Bird Registration Discount Available when students register by December 1, 2020

Classes will be held via Zoom. Instructors will send out Zoom invites one day before class begins. We encourage students to setup a Zoom account for themselves before class if they have not already to ensure when class begins you are able to jump straight into the art!
