Description

From Aristotle To Binge-Watching (Spring 2021)

Apr. 01 - May 18
6:00pm - 7:30pm Central Time

Instructor: Emilio Williams

The golden age of TV is based on dramatic rules that have been around for thousands of years.  Students of this seven week cohort will meet twice a week to learn from what HBO, Netflix, and Disney stole from the best theater theorists. We will learn the art of dramatic writing, for the stage or the screen, by looking closely at the most popular TV shows of our era, in a combination of micro-lectures and class discussions, with plenty of opportunities to share new pages and receive feedback.  Explore how popular culture can help us improve our own writing, and how we can get inspired by disciplines outside our own.

Emilio Williams is a bilingual (Spanish/English) award-winning writer and educator. His critically-acclaimed plays have been produced in Argentina, Estonia, France, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington DC.  His nonfiction work has been published in Hinterland Magazine and Imagine Theatres, among other publications.

Emilio has lectured around the world, and taught in several U.S. universities, including DePaul University, Columbia College Chicago, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Georgia State University. He has been a guest artist at the University of Portland, Mary Washington University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He holds a BA in Film and Video and  MFA in Writing. He is a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists where he is also a faculty member.  He divides his time between Chicago and Paris.

The Early Bird Registration Discount is not applicable for this course. Network Discounts still apply.

Classes will be held via Zoom. Instructors will send out Zoom invites one day before class begins. We encourage students to set up a Zoom account for themselves before class if they have not already to ensure when class begins you are able to jump straight into the art!
