Description

The Making of Monsters

Sep 07 - Oct 26
7:00pm - 9:00pm Central Time

Instructor: Hester Kamin

From Iago to Grendel, from The Snow Queen to Lady Macbeth, how are antagonists born? What backstory and what conflicting systems of need and desire fuse to create characters who plant seeds of jealousy and doubt, summon chaos, and fuel violence?  This course asks questions about the development of conscience, the nature of evil, and the relationship between history, fate, and choice. This course will culminate in a Zoom performance of student work, on Nov 02.

Hester Kamin has been Director of Education of five regional theatres and has directed and choreographed shows all over the world. As a writer, she has had eleven plays produced and facilitated countless ensemble-created theatre pieces. Most recently, Hester’s play about the Holocaust, In Flight: The Story of Sabine Van Dam, was honored with an Art Works award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Other recent projects include writing and directing Shipwrecked (The Tempest) for Gulfshore Playhouse and The Naples Philharmonic, directing I Never Saw Another Butterfly for The Naples Players and The Holocaust Museum, and creating and facilitating workshops for teens as a theatre partner of national project #ENOUGH: Plays to End Gun Violence. Hester is the winner of the Federation of Television and Radio Artists National Award, the Academy of American Poets Price, and the Associated Writing Programs Young Poets Prize and is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and Ecole Jacques Lecoq. She is honored to teach with Chicago Dramatists.  www.hesterkamin.com

Classes will be held via Zoom. Instructors will send out Zoom invites one day before class begins. We encourage students to setup a Zoom account for themselves before class if they have not already to ensure when class begins you are able to jump straight into the art!
